Midweek skating, The Americans 1.05-1.09
Jun. 5th, 2013 05:56 pmI went to the midday public session today, and while part of the rink is, er, broken and was blocked off (about a sixth of it at one end), it was otherwise pretty glorious. I got there just after an ice make (smooth as glaaaaass), and there weren't too many people there. I think I was one of three for a little while. The rest of the time, there was a handful of middle schoolers, several of whom thought I WUZ AWSUM SKATER because I can go backwards and do things like one-foot glides and forward alternating pumps. Sometimes kids are very good for the ego.
I tried doing the pumps on the oh-so-empty, weekday-publics-can-be-fabulous hockey circles, and they went pretty well. I worked on my forward pivots, just for the hell of it and because I think they look pretty, and the forward/counterclockwise one with my left toepick in the ice is coming along. Less so for the clockwise one around the right foot, but we can't have it all, I suppose.

Aha! I finally noticed that Joshua Brand and Adam Arkin are various flavors of producer for this show, and Brand has written some episodes. Ha, no wonder I like it. (For those of you wondering what that means, Joshua Brand was half of the team that created Northern Exposure, which also employed Adam Arkin in various on- and off-screen roles.)
Alas, I would like it better if everyone weren't making horrible life choices right now. Stan sleeping with Nina, Philip lying to Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Philip splitting up... I'll be honest, the biggest draw for me is still their arranged marriage that might become something more, and them separating kind of sucked all the air out of the show. Perhaps it's only temporary.
Speaking of bad life choices, many of which involve sex...look, I know it's FX and I should be expecting it, but good lord, could they maybe ease up on the sex scenes? All I can think watching them is how incredibly uncomfortable they must be for the actors. (Obviously I am not the target audience for said scenes.) If I speed through them, I worry I'm missing vital plot-related info.
In 1.05, the bit with the pigeons flying at the sound of the gunshot and Vasili seeing them, then realizing Udacha had been killed, was a nice, haunting touch.
I was not expecting Amador to kick the bucket in 1.09. Not AT ALL. Well played, show. On the other hand, as soon as Amador died, I knew poor baby Vladimir was done for, and that makes me sad because he was so adorable. :(
