Atlantis question

Question for the Atlantis types. What state could Weir have been brought up in and conceivably ended up with the accent that Torri Higginson appears to have settled on for her? I'm guessing along the border with Ontario, which would mean Michigan's Upper Penninsula and a small part of upstate New York (and maybe other states I've forgotten). Or maybe that tiny part of Virginia that still has that half-British, quasi-Canadian accent. Hmm. Any of these sound reasonable? It's not particularly important, but would be a nice touch for a fic.

Well, I guess she could be from my area since I didn't notice an accent. :P I also haven't been paying attention, so that may be it. What specifically are you noticing? (Certain phrases/words?)

Heh. I think just about everyone noticed her freaky, changes-every-three-words accent in the first two eps. It finally seems to have stabilized in the most recent ep. It sounds like a Amanda Tapping's, especially on words like "assume," but more Britified, and apparently on every word out of her mouth, not just a select few. It doesn't really sound like yours, I don't think.

Oh boy, I'm not sure. I don't know much about the differing Canadian accents. Perhaps one can explain the weirdness of her accent with all the diplomatic work she's done over the years. I'm sure she's lived in a bunch of places.

From what I understand, the stereotypical "Canadian" accent (i.e. "oot and aboot the hoose") is from Ontario, although I'm not sure if it extends over all of Ontario or just a small part. I've heard that people from Michigan's UP sound exactly like people from rural Ontario, which I think has the accent.

Yeah, diplomatic work would do a lot to explain the accent as well, but I did sort of want her to start off with one similar to the one she has now...my accent, for instance, would not ever turn into how she speaks, no matter how widely I travelled. ;)

Huh, interesting. I've always heard that there's a small part of Canada in which the people have what's usually called the most linguistically neutral accent in the world - other than that, I know very little about Canadian accents.

Did they ever say what nationality Weir is supposed to be? If she's American, not sure how you could explain the accent other than she's spent a lot of time in Canada.

Right, in the accent department, I'm pretty clueless. But I haven't noticed any accents, so maybe she's from Wisconsin, cause we're pratically Canadians anyway. :) (and mind you, this is just a wild random guess because random wild guesses are fun!)
