Since we always seem to be arguing about what to call a carbonated beverage at school, here's a study on what people across the nation call them.
Personally, I go for "coke" (even if it's Sprite, it's coke, dangit!). Most of the nation goes for "soda," followed by "pop." Crazy Midwesterners. I gotta say, whenever someone says something along the lines of "I'm putting pop in the fridge," I think "You're putting your grandfather in the refrigerator? What?"
Anyway. There you have it--the New Englanders and Middle Atlantic types win. Sigh. There's so many of y'all...
