Just watched "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead." Uh...did The Moff mean for the ending to be as creepy and disturbing as it was, or was he just blind to the variety of implications it has?

River--a very active, adventuring, Indiana Jones figure--sacrifices her life to save all the people and the Doctor, and then she...ends up stuck for eternity in a database with some coworkers, taking care of three semi-real children. "Everybody lives." This is living? It's not quite as bad as Ursula-the-paving-stone, but it's not what I'd call a happy ending.

I could write it off as a character flaw of the Doctor's--that he can't leave anyone, and particularly females, their agency and allow them to die completely, but rather likes to save them at the last second, often into some kind of half-life--and be totally cool with it, except that I don't think the creators see it as a flaw.

(Also, the whole "I became ugly, but now I'm intelligent as a consolation prize!" thing made me headdesk a bit.)

I wish I knew. Wait, no. I don't. It grosses me out, and I tend to sort of pretend it didn't happen. But! Other than that, it's a good episode! You just have to do some, um, freelance canon editing...

As I so often do with this show... *sigh* I think I'll just not bother watching even when you people recommend me episodes. I just end up annoyed.

(I did like the idea of things living in the dark. But it wasn't cool enough to overcome the Massive Gender Issues. And seriously, a library the size of a planet and there were only 4,000 people in it? I'm going to fanwank that everyone else had realized paper books were for losers and were reading on their 51st century e-book readers.)
