Monday Night Subtext...I mean, Tee Vee
Aug. 8th, 2011 10:46 pm3...2...1...
I was unaware it was possible for HG to get any cooler than she was already, and then she built a Victorian space rocket. Sure, she tried to destroy the world later. VICTORIAN SPACE ROCKET. I love this show!
I really liked the idea of tracing an artifact through 100+ years over three teams of Warehouse agents, and largely the execution did it proud. Of course I loved HG being her kickass self back in 1893, and Ianto being both in awe of and scared of her. (Bwahaha, he learned a particular martial art because he'd seen her use it a lot and was afraid she'd one day use it on him!) Also, "Is there any famous man in London you haven't [had sex with]?" / "Oscar Wilde. Though not for lack of trying." HA. Oh, HG.
I got the impression from her intro episode that she was actually rather close to her brother, and she gave him the ideas to write about because she was too busy inventing and chasing down artifacts to write anything, and didn't really care about the recognition anyway. Apparently he was actually a vapid jerk instead? Eh, whatever. I haven't seen S2 in a year; very possibly I misremember.
The only thing about that time period I didn't care overmuch for was the attempt at Victorian-style re-creation of the modern team's snarky banter. It just sounded too stilted. They are going to have to develop some kind of dialogue style that's both Victorian and recognizably W13-ish for the spin-off, and this was a good attempt, but they're not quite there yet.
The Jack and Rebecca scenes were...kind of blah. I haven't seen their S2 episode since it aired, and I'd forgotten pretty much everything about them, so I couldn't care much for their story. Plus those two actors are legit awful. I felt like I was watching a high school stage play when they were at the barn, and a bad one at that.
And the modern-day scenes were GREAT! Awwww, Claudia likes having HG back. Even Artie seemed kind of regretful when he told her not to get too used to having her there. And of course Myka liked having her back! Well, when she wasn't feeling utterly conflicted about it, anyway. Loved their scenes together. They didn't get a lot of time together, but they managed to convey a lot of regret and latent friendship and/or desire in them. The last one was especially poignant. They do make a great team. Pleeeeeeeeeeease can we get an HG redemption arc, pleeeeeeeeease?
I'm unsure whether Pete's militant dislike of HG really stems from, as Myka suspected, the fact that HG's attempt to destroy the world ran Myka away from the Warehouse for a while, or something else. Hmmm.
Don't Hate the Player
So much better than last week. Is there really any question of whether Jane and Maura are together? I remain befuddled by how this much OBVIOUS SUBTEXT could be unintentional. Janet Tamaro is lying through her teeth with every interview she does, isn't she? I mean, really. Maura cutting off the toes of her surely-expensive shoes to make them fit Jane? WHO EVEN DOES THIS? (I don't even care that the stated reason was so that Jane would look sexy for her date/interrogation with the ball player. Actually, Maura seemed like she was doing it more because she has Fashion Ideals, Goddammit, and no dress of hers was going to be worn without the appropriate footwear. Though for the record, I thought the boots with the dress were kind of cool.)
Also, Maura wearing Jane's clothes andhinting complaining that she got hit on by two women? Like that wasn't intentional. Also, banter. So much snarky, we-are-so-married banter.
Um, yeah, so there was a plot. I called the player Jane "dated" from the moment he handed her his phone number, because this is SO VERY STRAIGHT Rizzoli & Isles and none of their potential boyfriends last past one episode, so of course he had to be the bad guy. The woman playing the wife and half-owner of the team was incredibly familiar, but I can't quite place her and IMDB won't cough up a name for the actress, so I'll just have to wonder.
The Rizzoli family drama was somewhat interesting, but far more interesting was the DOGGEH. That dog is the cutest thing EVER, I swear.

Date: 2011-08-09 04:20 am (UTC)Warehouse 13. Oh, I love it. I only started watching just before season 3 began, but I'm officially all caught up and am now obsessed with HG/Myka. And that rocket was pretty awesome (I also liked how she was flirting with that girl who was more interested in her brother - adorable!). HG is so badass. I really loved the scenes she and Myka had together, especially the last one. I loved Myka saying "I wish you would have realized that sooner", about her and Helena making a good team. Oh, the subtext. And I am now totally in love with Jo Kelly after watching her one-woman ship campaign for HG/Myka at ComicCon and listening to her during the audio commentaries for the last episode of last season.
I think Monday has turned into Femslash Night. The epic subtext of HG & Myka followed by the screamingly obvious subtext of Jane & Maura. It makes me so happy to have so much femslash on my tv after so long without watching any femslash-viable shows.

Aw, yay! HG/Myka was what drew me to the show as well. I tried watching in S1, got bored, tuned back in randomly for some S2 episodes, and was completely captivated by HG as a character and HG/Myka as a ship. Just...damn. So much chemistry!
And that rocket was pretty awesome
HG: Builder of Rockets, Inventor of Time Machines, and Owner of My Heart.
(I also liked how she was flirting with that girl who was more interested in her brother - adorable!)
That was HILARIOUS, yes. Oh, HG.

??! Links? I just tried searching for some, but something about her Canadian Valley Girl accent and intonation (there are traces of it when she plays Myka, but it's toned way down) drives me straight up the wall and I couldn't face going through all the stuff on YouTube from Comic Con.

It really, really has.
It makes me so happy to have so much femslash on my tv after so long without watching any femslash-viable shows.
ME TOO! I'd like it better if the shows were good in and of themselves (W13 is definitely better than R&I, and I'd probably still watch it without the femslash, but it's still a "put my brain in neutral" kind of show), but femslash possibilities = excellent no matter what.

Date: 2011-08-09 06:43 pm (UTC)Yes, yes he did, as immortalized in the blooper reel. And on closer inspection, this appears to be a different dog. Which doesn't really surprise me - I think peeing on a co-star is one of those things that automatically gets you fired.

Yeah, I started from the beginning of S1 and I got so bored, but I knew about HG, so I stuck it out waiting for the femslash to redeem it, and lo, it did.

A fan asked about the HG/Myka relationship, and Jo Kelly said that she and Jaime Murray talked about it, and how to make the dynamic interesting, and they decided to have the characters "fall in love a little bit". You can see the video on tumblr here. Then later, she's doing an interview, and they ask her about the Pete/Myka relationship and then ask "you don't see a little love in the air for Myka?" and she responds "Only with HG." The background noise is really loud, but that video is here.

Yeah, I've still enjoyed most W13 episodes that don't have HG in them, but the R&I episodes without Jane/Maura slash are pretty much unwatchable. But it's so nice to have two shows at once with viable femslash. I mean, hell, femslash fandom (at least in my circles) spent years with Alex/Olivia and Emily/JJ being the two main ships (well, and Cara/Kahlan, but I prefer my shows a lot less rape-y), and there was almost nothing to go on, and now we have Rizzoli & Isles and Warehouse 13 and it's all femslash, all the time.
Man, I need W13 icons.

Probably so, probably so.

Indeed it does. To be fair, Claudia kind of redeemed it a little earlier, but not as much as the femslash. Even now, the show kind of has that bland, almost kiddish feeling that seems to be common to Skiffy's current post-BSG crop of shows. There's tension and drama, but never too much. They say characters' lives or the world are at stake, but I never feel like they really are, because everything will be tied up neatly at the end of the hour. There's some sense of wonder and some interesting speculation (in the sense of "speculative fiction"), but it's always small-scale and I can never really get caught up in it like I do with, say, Fringe. I do like most of the characters and their relationships to each other (it is SO GREAT to have a plethora of gen relationships to watch!), and they are doing some decent character arcy things, but that's pretty much the only thing I like about it. (Maybe I just don't appreciate sci-fi that isn't space opera?)
OMG those videos! Hee. That's awesome.

Agreed. At least I like the other people on W13, and there's the occasional Victorian Space Rocket to keep my attention.

Elaine Hendrix. I remember her originally from the '98 remake of The Parent Trap, but she's been in a bunch of stuff, including Castle.
Is there really any question of whether Jane and Maura are together? I remain befuddled by how this much OBVIOUS SUBTEXT could be unintentional.
It's very, very obvious. Let's start with Jane and Maura sitting so close on the couch, or Jane smacking Maura's butt as she walks past, or, you know, trading clothes (and the adorably hesitant way Jane says "what...why?" when Maura says "unzip me"). They are so married. Also, I'm not surprised women hit on Maura when she was in Jane's clothes (and Jane' slightly jealous "really?" when Maura mentioned it was v. cute). She looked very, very gay and very, very sexy. Oh, and Jane & Maura coming back to Maura's place so late at night that Angela was in bed? Okay, it was done so Jane could be there when they found Maura's stuff was missing, but there's absolutely no reason why Jane should come home with Maura that late, unless they were going to spend the night together (again).
Though for the record, I thought the boots with the dress were kind of cool.
Yeah, I thought so too. Maura could've saved her shoes if she'd just made Jane take those socks off (or at least roll them down so they weren't visible over the top of the boots, because, yeah, that wasn't a good look).
The Rizzoli family drama was somewhat interesting, but far more interesting was the DOGGEH. That dog is the cutest thing EVER, I swear.
Jo Friday is adorable, isn't she? And that poultry thing is true - although Buster's a big dog, he's allergic to chicken (and beef and pork and wheat and pollen and about a million other things) & he always licks his paws obsessively when he's been exposed to an allergen. Also, as if anyone needed more proof that I'm a Crazy Dog Lady, I decided I liked Tommy the instant I saw him with Jo (and even more now his new job is as a dog walker).

Date: 2011-08-09 06:10 pm (UTC)And I remember her as Roxy Wasserman, Succubus Fashion Designer from The Middleman! Thank you, you have just saved me a lot of wondering who she was. :)
Jane smacking Maura's butt as she walks past
I somehow managed to totally miss this!
and the adorably hesitant way Jane says "what...why?" when Maura says "unzip me"
That was SO CUTE! It really seemed like she was thinking, "Are all my dreams about to come true?" there.
Also, I'm not surprised women hit on Maura when she was in Jane's clothes
Is there a lesbian wardrobe style? I keep seeing references to Jane's butch clothes or whatever, and...I dunno, to me they just look like professional clothes women wear. I've seen that look out in the wild quite a bit.

Exactly.

Yeah, I agree. I dislike beige shoes as rule; they're always so bland.
My remaining little dog is allergic to wheat and assorted outdoor things as well, although thankfully not to meat. She's been on an antihistamine (or maybe it's oral cortisone? She's really my mom's dog, and she handles all the vet stuff) forever, but it seems to do very little. She chews on her paws all the time.

Date: 2011-08-09 08:44 pm (UTC)Oh yeah, that happens just when Jane & Maura are about to leave for the stadium. And Maura looks like she really enjoyed it.
That was SO CUTE! It really seemed like she was thinking, "Are all my dreams about to come true?" there.
Yep, it was adorable. Jane was all "wait, here in your office with the door open? Um, okay!" I also liked that Maura wore Jane's clothes all evening (anybody else's clothes, and you know she would have changed immediately and probably showered), and that Jane immediately started unzipping her dress the second she and Maura got home.

On Jane, her clothes look like "professional women who isn't particularly interested in fashion." (with the exception of the Oxford shirt she sometimes wears, which is ridiculously gay). They look especially gay on Maura because they're just big enough on her that it looks like she's wearing men's clothes.

Aw. Little dogs are the cutest. I miss when Buster was that small. He's really Steph's dog, but I feel like I have joint custody because he stays with me at least two days a week, and usually more. His allergies are crazy - pretty much the only thing he can eat without problems is hypoallergenic fish & rice kibble (which smells about as gross as it sounds), but he is annoyingly smart and opens cupboards to help himself to food (last week, I went to the grocery store at the end of the road and came back to find he'd opened the cupboard & helped himself to an entire loaf of bread (there was nothing but an empty packet, some crumbs, and a very happy golden retriever), and one time when I was in the shower, he ate an entire stick of butter and half a packet of gravy granules), so I'm very familiar with the paw licking.

Hehe, yes. Jane's germs...eh, whatever.
Not like they aren't swapping body fluids already. On Jane, her clothes look like "professional women who isn't particularly interested in fashion." (with the exception of the Oxford shirt she sometimes wears, which is ridiculously gay).
...Oxford shirts are gay? *eyes own Oxfords* Is it more the combination of Angie Harmon's looks and demeanor with the shirt than the shirt itself? Because I can see what people mean about the way she carries herself being not-straight.
They look especially gay on Maura because they're just big enough on her that it looks like she's wearing men's clothes.
Ah, this makes sense. Although didn't Jane's shirt have a ruffle or something at the neckline? Maybe it was just unbuttoned and poofed out a bit. It looked more feminine than masculine to me, but then again, my gaydar basically doesn't exist.
Dogs who get into everything are simultaneously annoying and adorable. Such a dilemma when they do something bad, but are so cute doing it.

Date: 2011-08-11 02:57 am (UTC)I was amazed at her facial expression. She just looks so surprised and delighted at Jane's actions. It was a blink and you'll miss it moment, but if you didn't blink, it was fabulous. The live feed wasn't working, so I had to wait til morning to download, but I was spoiled on twitter by hordes of fangirls screaming "ASS SLAP OMG *DIES*!!!!11" about 5 minutes in, so I knew to expect it. I'm curious to know if it was scripted, or if it was ad-libbed like the stuffed-bear kiss from episode 3. It seems like something Angie & Sasha would do themselves, since they apparently have a habit of smacking each other and grabbing each other's asses, according to Tamaro.
Is it more the combination of Angie Harmon's looks and demeanor with the shirt than the shirt itself?
Yeah, that's pretty much it. Just the act of wearing an Oxford shirt (or plaid or whatever) doesn't make somebody look gay, just like the butch swagger Jane has isn't necessarily gay, nor is the way she sits or carries herself, but all of those things put together add up to gaygaygaygaygay.
Although didn't Jane's shirt have a ruffle or something at the neckline? Maybe it was just unbuttoned and poofed out a bit.
I didn't see a ruffle - on closer inspection, it just seems to be a little oversized and poofed out a bit. I think even for Jane it's a little too big, or more baggy than fitted.

Date: 2011-08-11 07:58 am (UTC)They are so building up to a redemption arc. They have to be. They did so much work to show how much HG regrets everything in this episode and how much she's changed. And everybody misses her! There is going to be redemption. I know it.
I like to interpret Pete as the person who watched their BFF get utterly crushed by their SO and as such will be the hardest sell that the SO isn't a complete jerk anymore. With added attempted world destroying and abandonment issues. It's not entirely rational, he knows it's not entirely rational, but he's terrified of Myka being hurt like that again and thus will do all sorts of thing to protect her from that, even if she says he doesn't need to, because that's what BFFs do.
Why do I still not have any W13 icons?

Date: 2011-08-12 09:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, probably so.
Especially as I got the impression that HG was a bit into that one girl who was all into HG's brother. So possibly a bit of jealousy there.
I don't think she was into that girl--probably she was too silly for HG--so much as she was just flirting because that's just kind of how she rolls, and also because it would piss off her brother.

I too feel a redemption arc coming. She did help them on this mission! Though she did that in S2 before she went evil. Hmm. I still would like to see her whole going-evil thing be a cover-up for some longer covert mission, such as making her look like a great, evil-and-disgruntled target for recruitment by Southern Sally so she can take down Sally's organization from the inside, but I doubt that'll happen. Oh, well.
