Serenity'd!

Managed to get to Columbus last night to see Serentiy (because why would the theatre in Mt. Vernon play it, after all?). Yay!
- So...yeah. Whedon didn't spend a decade working on a vampire show AT ALL. That wasn't a GIANT WOODEN STAKE or anything. Nope. Not at all. (Wash! Wah!)
- Everything to do with the Reavers was awesome. Seeing Serenity all painted with red and with skeletons hanging off it definitely gave me chills. Then the whole passel of Reaver ships coming out of the nebula after them was definitely the best moment in the movie. Hee.
- The parallels to Serenity Valley during the endless firefight at the end were quite nice, even if two-thirds of the way through I was getting a little bored. I can only take so much gunfire.
- "You mean...like sex? The hell with this, I'm gonna live!" I'm kind of "eh" on the whole Simon/Kaylee thing, but that was worth it.
- Mal/Inara came across better on the big screen than they did on TV. Not much better, still a little forced, but not as painful. The "Notice how we weren't fighting? Trap!" line was great.
- And...Book doesn't have the 'fro. I miss the 'fro. I won't miss Book all that much now that he's, y'know, dead, but I will miss his hair.
- I have nothing to say about the actual, oh, PLOT of the movie. Just that I was glad they addressed both River and the Reavers, and managed to connect them in a fairly artful way.
- The speakers at the theater had something VERY strange going on with them...they bumped up everybody's voice about half an octave. Jayne was highly amusing like that, and Mal sounded a little on the chipmunky side. I really didn't like what it did to Zoe's and Kaylee's voices, and River sounded about five. It was actually really annoying. But oh, well. That may have been part of the reason why it didn't seem to translate as well to the big screen as I thought it would.
- Speaking of which...final verdict: much like the TV show. Not particularly groundbreaking, and I can't point to things I really like about it, but strangely addictive anyway. In a kind of, "Well, one day I'll want to see more...not today, maybe not this year, but someday..." way, at any rate.

It was our monthly shift at the Humane Society this morning. Puppies! Kitties! There was one half-grown kitten, Marcy, who attempted to climb into everyone's ears. If necessary, she would jump onto you from three feet away. Craaaazy kitty. Then there was the sociopath cat, who reminded me of Cat. Mmmm, antisocial cats. Plus, two-month old wriggly shepherd puppies. Awwwwww.
And now...laundry. And studying. Yes.

Yay Serenity!

Date: 2005-10-09 10:32 pm (UTC)Still don't get your not-crazy-love yet ;?P, but still glad you liked it. (And the three times I've seen it in 3 different theaters, the sound was great, so that wasn't right!)
And Mal and Inara might win you over yet. *g* C'mon, how can you not love their last conversation (and the subtleness of the writing, yay!)? ;?P

Date: 2005-10-10 06:38 pm (UTC)I think it has to be a Whedon thing. It must.

I thought it had something to do with this theatre. I'm sure I'll see it once it comes out on DVD, preferably with non-chipmunky sound.

Um, subtle? *raises eyebrow* I'd go more with "anvilicious" as an adjective, but each to their own... (Forced 'ship bugs me beyond all reason.)

Date: 2005-10-11 08:00 am (UTC)Sorry about the chipmunks. :?P
And by subtle, I was thinking mostly of "I'm...not sure." "Good answer...", and the fact that we *didn't* get smoochies or sudden declarations of "everything we've just been through made me realize I always DID love you!", which I think we would have in the hands of many lesser writer/directors. That's anvilicious to me. So...yeah, I'll stick by my 'subtle' judgement, for my own self at least. ;?P

I think that moves on from "anvilicious" to "I walk out of the theatre" territory, actually. ;) I dunno...the exchange, while technically falling under the "guidelines of "subtle," just seemed forced to me, and kind of "oh, look, they have CHEMISTRY! Don't you see it? They're gonna bicker into the sunset together!" And ordinarily I would be all over that (hello, Maggie/Joel (Northern Exposure) and Maddie/David shipper from way back), but this one just does not fly for me.
Yeah, I'm weird. I'll go stand in my mutant outgrowth corner now. ;)

Date: 2005-10-13 05:51 am (UTC)But...that is of course me, and we all enjoy different styles.
Definitely agree on the dialogue, though! His folks talk like shippers. *g* (Granted, many of the shippers are fans of and influenced by the Collective Works of Mr Whedon...but still!)
*Shrugs again on Mal/Inara* I love their bicker-into-the-sunset routine...they're probably my favorite such couple, really. (Excepting J&A, but I think they really outgrew a lot of the bickering.) I love how they can be so disrespectful and adoring of each other at the same time, and really mean it all, because they love each other without yet quite understanding the other person's life. And then you get the little glimmers that deep down they're not so different....
Don't mind me, I'm a mushball. :?P And you don't have to stand in the corner, we like our mutant outgrowths! ;?)

Dude, I got told to stand in a cube once on the shipperlist. (I believe the entire thing went something along the lines of "You need to stand in so many corners you should just go stand in a cube.") Hee.

Date: 2005-10-22 09:11 am (UTC)I myself love Whedon's plotting...part of that might be having gone through all of Buffy & Angel and seen how he plots season arcs, which I love (especially how he interweaves the big plots with the small, and the ongoing actual growth of characters...reminds me of Harry Potter in that way, especially with Buffy--watching people grow through 7 very realistic years of life in a fantasy setting). But I do also just enjoy the stories he chose to tell with Firefly & Serenity. *shrugs*
And as for the list sending you to a cube...I think that was a DRD porn thing, which is a whole other issue! *snerk*

Oh no, this was a couple years before the DRD porn. I think it was a combination of the Pricness Bride and Beatles things. I don't even want to know what Al (the person who sent me to the cube) would have thought of that. *g*

Date: 2005-10-23 11:13 pm (UTC)As for the Mutant Outgrowth thing...Beatles and Princess Bride? I'm not sure I know the story...I know Jodie doesn't like Princess Bride...you don't like PB either, or Beatles? Can't say I understand it, but I would never send you to the corner for it. ;?P
